Calm Heart, Quiet Mind - Clearing the Effects of Trauma

We understand trauma as any wounding of the spirit. It can have a lasting impact on mood, sense of self, and self-worth. Traumatic events can leave us with overwhelming feelings of guilt, shame, anger, sadness and fear. Trauma can be ongoing or about a specific event. It is often hard to process the experience of trauma, which can lead to stress reactions or PTSD, especially when the fear of death or horror is involved.

Six Degrees Community Acupuncture in partnership with Breakaway will offer a 12 week Acupuncture program to effectively treat the stress and experiences of trauma. Each week participants will receive two acupuncture treatments that treat the common and diverse symptoms of trauma:

  • Anxiety
  • Pain
  • Depression
  • Insomnia, nightmares
  • Headaches
  • Feeling overwhelmed
  • Chronic Fatigue
  • Flash backs, emotional triggers
  • Low energy, exhaustion, fatigue
  • Unwanted substance use
  • Post traumatic stress disorder PTSD
  • Fear, panic
  • Over thinking
  • Depression
  • Feeling on guard
  • Easily startled, nervous
  • Auto immune issuesAcupuncture is an effective treatment for healing trauma. By stimulating specific points on the body balance is restored. This program focuses on emotional, organ and energy rebalancing. It rebalances the heart (joy), kidneys (fear), liver (anger), lungs (sadness), pancreas (worry) and the parasympathetic nervous system.

The practitioners you'll be working with are Bo Yih Thom M.S.W., Counsellor and Susanda Yee D. Acup., Communtiy Acupuncturist.

Bo Yih is a feminist counsellor on the Harm Reduction Outreach Team at Breakaway, where she supports women who are in conflict with the law and who are living with a substance use concern. This work is done in both community and prison settings. She is a trained Acupuncture Detoxification Specialist, certified in ear acupuncture to treat substance use and PTSD, by the National Acupuncture Detoxification Association. She is also a part time professor at the Assaulted Women and Children Counsellor Advocate Program at George Brown College.

Susanda has in her 16 year career as an Acupuncturist and Bodyworker worked with people who've experienced all sorts of trauma. From auto accidents to sexual, and emotional abuse. She's learned much in the way of how trauma expresses itself through physical, emotional and spiritual pain. She is the co-owner and director of the first community acupuncture centre in Canada.
